You don’t need to live with receding gums.
Are your gums receding to the point where you experience sensitivity? Do you feel as if your smile is a little too “toothy”? Besides being unattractive and causing sensitivity, receding gums can also expose your teeth to decay and disease.
We can cover areas where the gum has shrunk with Connective Tissue Grafts. This may be a single area, or multiple areas. Gum recession causes a loss of natural defense against bacteria. The exposed root surface is also softer than enamel, which can lead to damage from tooth brushing and acidic food. In some cases, the problem can be quite serious.
Tissue is taken from the roof of your mouth and grafted onto the area of recession. In some cases, we do multiple locations at once. When recession is a problem, gum reconstruction using grafting techniques is an option. The gingival graft procedure is highly predictable and results in a stable healthy band of attached tissue around the tooth.
CT grafts significantly reduce sensitivity in areas of recession. They actually allow the gum height to be regained. Years ago, such grafts only protected the gum from further loss, but today we can regain lost tissue.
The grafted area needs to be maintained with good home care, regular cleanings and use of an ultra soft toothbrush.
