Adults with crooked teeth sometimes feel like they have lived with it for so long that they might as well keep living with it. Plus, they often don’t know if there are good teeth-straightening options that work within their lifestyle. For example, most adults would like to avoid frequent trips to a regular orthodontist office, getting and maintaining metal braces along with a bunch of kids. They also don’t necessarily want their “tooth-fixing” to be obvious to co-workers and others.
For teenagers whose social lives and social media presence is of paramount importance — wearing metal braces can have a significant negative impact on their self-esteem. Invisalign is an option for fixing crooked teeth that addresses all of these concerns and more.
What is Invisalign?
The Invisalign procedure uses a series of clear plastic “aligners” which fit over your teeth and gently push them along the path to their ultimate position. You wear the aligners for at least 20-22 hours everyday, but you can take them out for eating and brushing your teeth. The aligners can treat a variety of issues from minor improvements to extensive adjustments, including overbites, underbites and even crossbites. For those who really don’t want to let on they have braces, Invisalign is practically undetectable.
Fewer Office Visits
Invisalign treatment fits in better with a busy lifestyle, as it often requires fewer office visits than traditional braces do. That’s because there are no adjustments to make and no broken wires to fix. After the initial appointment, follow-up appointments are usually scheduled for every four to six weeks.
No Food Restrictions
Unlike with traditional braces, Invisalign doesn’t come with restrictions on what you can eat. You can continue to enjoy the foods you love, such as chips, salt-water taffy, corn on the cob, or caramel apples. And because you remove the aligners for brushing and flossing, you’re less likely to get the plaque buildup and tooth staining that can result from metal braces. There’s even a teen version of Invisalign with room for growing molars and a blue dot that indicates when it’s time to change aligners.
Invisalign is Just as Effective
Invisalign has been proven to be just as effective as metal braces — even with complex concerns. However, because you can take the aligners out, it’s up to you to make sure you wear them at least 20 hours a day. If you don’t, the treatment won’t work properly and might even make your bite worse. It’s interesting to note that teenagers seem to be more reliable than adults when it comes to wearing their aligners — clinical data shows that teens wear Invisalign on average for 21 hours per day.
There are some instances in which Invisalign is not recommended for fixing crooked teeth. For example, if you have very severely tipped teeth, rotated teeth or large gaps between teeth, Invisalign may not be the best treatment for you.
Whether you go with Invisalign or another option for fixing your crooked teeth, you shouldn’t delay getting your teeth straightened. Besides improving your smile and confidence, having straight teeth is good for your overall health. Misaligned teeth can put uneven pressure on your jaw and cause damage over the long term, even leading to tooth loss.
